Could AI be a real ally for folks with ADHD?

There are several ways we can leverage AI to support neurodivergent symptoms

I live with ADHD, and like many of you, I spend my life looking for the next project that will feed my brain dopamine. When AI came into our everyday lives, I was initially a little intimidated. However, after sessions of hyperfocus – fueled by ADHD itself – I have come to see AI as a powerful ally for folks with neurodivergent.

Here are some examples of how we can leverage it to support us:

Personalize learning according to our needs and pace. Maybe you're a student who needs to wrap your head around an intimidating syllabus and exam schedule, or maybe you're studying new strategies as part of your career. AI can help you by analyzing how you learn and creating personalized recommendations and plans of action.

Assist with project initiation by offering proposals. Again, AI can do the heavy lifting by automating the mundane tasks of project management, forecasting risks, and helping you create insightful proposals. I use it regularly to help me get unstuck when staring at a blank screen, overwhelmed with ideas on how to take on a daunting task.

Provide real-time feedback. Artificial Intelligence uses natural language processing (NLP) to analyze individual customer responses, social media posts, and chat conversations, which is great for any business. Plus, it could prove invaluable to folks like me who work in education – helping teachers make adjustments to their syllabus and assignments, for example.

Prioritize tasks and help with schedule management. Got a mountain 'to-do' list? AI algorithms can be used to assist in prioritizing tasks based on their importance, deadlines, and dependencies. Since folks with ADHD particularly struggle with managing their workload, this could be especially helpful.

Reduce distractions to enhance attention span. Another common complaint among the clients I coach is getting distracted. Again, AI technology, working as virtual assistants, can learn from users' work and recommend workflows. This can help remove unnecessary distractions and allow us to focus on important tasks.

Reduce the cognitive load of writing tasks by converting speech to text. Text-to-Speech and Speech-to-Text Conversion is another powerful tool for everyone, but this is especially true for neurodivergent folks. People with conditions such as dyslexia, ADHD, or ASD sometimes have reading, writing, and typing challenges, so these AI-powered aids can help us access information more readily, communicate better, and become more independent.

Support the work done with an ADHD coach between sessions through reminders and task initiation aids. As an ADHD coach, one of my many roles is a facilitator of task-initiation tips. So, to be able to suggest AI-powered tools to set up reminders for my clients is a massive help. I often work alongside my clients to set up reminders for specific tasks – making sure that the alerts will work for my particular client's needs.

Overall, AI can enhance our strengths while mitigating the impact of the ADHD symptoms that affect us the most. Many of these suggestions may seem a little overwhelming, and that's why I'm here.
